On coming November, the 8th, the election day, the American citizens will elect a new president for their country. I ‘m sure they will vote to the best of their conscience.
I am not allowed as a little inhabitant of the “old Europe” (as Donald Rumsfeld said once against France and Germany), to tell them for who to vote. I have no right to express myself on this point.
I follow at distance – when I have time – -the presidential campaign. Of course I’m aware that I am partially informed and what I know is through Internet, TV or the newspapers. But what I see, hear or read is worrying me because the election in November will have important – if not huge – impacts on the rest of the world, economically and politically speaking.
I hear or read speeches trying to offend the other candidate or fans of this candidate.
I hear or read speeches of great promises of a new Eden where honey will flow at will and the cornucopia will be for everyone, untaxed.
I hear or read speeches about the building of a wall or walls.
I hear or read speeches of segregation with people of specific nationality or religion.
I hear or read speeches talking about the restauration of the lost greatness. And I wonder if there is no voluntary confusing between greatness and supremacy.
I can understand the proudness of belonging to a great nation. I can imagine the strength it gives. But History has shown that the confusing between greatness and supremacy can lead to arrogance and denial of the others, and sometimes with other disastrous and dreadful consequences.
The greatness of the United States of America is a matter of fact. Nobody doubt about it. History is there to prove it. But greatness is not improved (or restored) by closing on himself, by building walls against others, by refusing the fact that the world is now a global village.
You know what? In this global village from North to South, East to West, everybody share the daily same “domestic” problems: more or less urban violence, more or less unemployment, more or less financial crisis, more or less not paid enough, more or less difficulties to meet the budget at the end of the month, …
And what about terrorism. It is a common plague. We should better to be united in our efforts to fight it and to find the solutions in our societies to avoid that people fall in extremism.
Maybe we can find that the actual candidates are both not the best opportunity. According a popular saying in this case, you have to choose the lesser bad.
Dear American citizens and friends, be cautious and proud.
